Let's Learn Korean #1 [ENGLISH]
Comparison of Korean and English First, when form a Korean sentences, Korean verb comes last, what does this mean? Unlike English, in Korean the verb always appears last in the sentences. So the order of the sentence is usually: subject, object, verb. 브루스 (Bruce) 영화 (movies) 봐요 (watch). Secondly, Korean has markers, either subject marker or object marker. Besides that, although the verb is always last, the order of the other parts of the sentence is not very strict in Korean. That is because, unlike English, Korean has markers which define what role different words play in a sentence (subject, object, etc). 브루스 (Bruce) 가 영화 (movies)을 봐요 (watch). 가 - subject marker 을 - object marker Lastly, Korean order of questions and answer are the same, this is the easiest part in learning Korean. The sentence structure of Korean order of questions and its answer are the same. Think of questions and answers such as: Who is she? and She is Jane. In English, questions and answers has different structures. Verbs, subjects, and objects move around depending on the context. But, in Korean, the only difference between questions and answer is questions are always end with a rising tone and declarative sentences end with a slightly falling tone. When answering a question, simply replace the question word (which, where, when, who what, how) with your answer, with yes/no questions, the question and answer can be exactly the same. We’ll learn about it then. ================= How are English words pronounced in Korean? One general rule of pronouncing Korean is that each consonant needs a vowel to be pronounced and made into a syllable. Without a vowel’s help, a consonant can not stand alone as an independent syllable. Let’s examine the methods by which the syllables are composed. Let’s Learn Korean! When a vowel stands by itself - there will be two types of vowels either vertical vowels(vowels which are written on the right - 아) and horizontal vowels (vowels which are written below - 우), both types of vowels have no Korean consonants When a consonant and a vowel occur together - the consonant sound first. When a consonant and a vowel occur together, consonant sound first like 나, 누 etc. When a vowel and a consonant occur together - consonant sound last. The final consonant (which is optional) is called the final consonant (”batchim”) to distinguish it from the initial consonant - 안, 운 When a vowel occurs between consonants - Please note that although most of the time there is only one final consonant, occasionally there will be two, but that are not much - 난, 눈, 밖 Writing/pronouncing English words in Korean is no exception to the rule. For example, love, which has one vowel ‘o’ for a consonant l and e for v, is pronounced lo-ve ( 러-브 ) as two syllables. But a word such as skirt, which has only a vowel i for consonants s, k , r , t , must be broken into multiple syllables in Korean: s-kir-t ( 스-커-트 ) as three syallables. 감사합니다 - Thank you! =============== Learn Korean Language Lesson 1 - Korean Consonants and Vowels Korean Hangeul consist of 40 letters, 19 consonant and 21 vowels.
